Quilting at Burradon Community Primary School
YQ Rep Angela McIntosh has been working with Burradon Community Primary School and English Heritage on a quilting heritage project. Deputy Head Teacher Elaine Watson says, 'My class have enjoyed working with Angela McIntosh this half term as part of our local heritage project. The children have made an amazing quilt which they are extremely proud of. The children now have a good understanding of the processes involved in making a quilt and how the quilt would have been made in the days before machinery. I am astonished at how well the children have worked and the high quality of the finished quilt.'
The children made blocks using a technique called mosaic patchwork or 'paper piecing', which was also used in the 1800s, in the era of the Burradon pit disaster. Then bright coloured fabric donated by Coats was used to contrast with the children's artwork printed on white cotton.
Thank you to Angela and to Region 15E for your support of this project.
