Fun at the Festival of Quilts 2016
A BIG well done to all YQs who entered the Festival of Quilts challenge 'On the Beach'! All the entries were fantastic, very creative, imaginative and brilliant sewing techniques.
A special congratulations to Matilda Tate (Region 3) who won 1st prize in the 5 - 8 Category and Holly Neeve (Region 9) for 1st first prize in the 9 - 11 category.
Let's hear what inspired the Young Quilters when creating their quilts...
Fiona (Region 2) - "This is my first quilt and the first time I have entered in The Festival of Quilts. I enjoyed making it and doing the quilting!"
Matilda (Region 3) - "I have been quilting for just about a year and I LOVE it! My inspiration was for my quilt to look like a window from the beach into the sea. I wanted it to be bright and colourful with as many different textures and if possible to make it look 3D with lots of sparkle."
Holly (Region 9) - "I love Punch and Judy and have created a beach scene with their show as my centerpiece. My inspiration comes from living close to the beach, The shells in my bucket come from a family holiday in Mexico."
Madeleine (Region 2) - " I remember being on a family holiday in Florida and sitting on the beach watching a beautiful sunset.'
Rhys (Region 11) - "My favourite thing to do at the beach is go and look at the lifeboat stations and sometimes I'm lucky enough to see them launching." SEE PHOTO TO THE ABOVE - 'Launching the Lifeboat'
Lola (Region 6) - "I like the beach at sunset and the shimmering light bouncing off the water!"
Darci (Reg 5) - "Holidays at Praa Sands in Cornwall. I saw blue swirls fabric and thought 'rock pools'. Then I saw brown fabric and thought 'sand dunes'. I found yellow then blue fabric and thought of different layers of beach and out at sea. I chose prints to 'fussy cut' and applique. I heated organza for seaweed."
Hannah (Region 11) - "Life is full of dreams;we often lose sight of reality. Head in the clouds, looking through rose tinted lenses, tiptoeing around difficult subjects, ignoring the real issue: the big blue planet. We are destroying this beautiful earth and I want my work to highlight the TRUTH and the FANTASY. Global-warming is happening right now!"
Mathilda (Region 11) - " I love the beach and I am always fascinated by sea life so I created baby turtles migrating to the sea. I used a variety of blue fabrics to represent the waves and an ombre effect to show the surf."
Anna (Region 6 ) - "I designed this piece to reflect a Mexican beach I went to on holiday. It was very quiet and the houses were really colourful."
Isabelle (Region 6) - "This quilt was based on my memories from a holiday in Cornwall."
Nancy (Region 6) - "I was inspired by my Easter holiday in Pembroke. It was a great holiday and we did lots of exploring."
